Cameron Stracher, of counsel to the firm, has represented many media clients in a variety of defamation, privacy, reporter’s privilege, copyright, employment, and commercial matters for fifteen years. As a litigator, Mr. Stracher has successfully defended newspapers, broadcasters, websites, and publishers from libel, invasion of privacy, and related claims.

His cases include: Suarez Corp. v. CBS, Inc., 100 F.3d 957 (6th Cir. 1996) (affirming dismissal of libel claim against television network); Raine v. CBS, Inc., 25 F. Supp. 2d 434 (S.D.N.Y. 1998) (verdict for defendant on breach of contract claims by royalty holder); DeLoach v. Infinity Broadcasting, 164 F.3d 398 (7th Cir. 1999) (affirming dismissal of employment discrimination claim); Hybrid Films, Inc. v. Combest, 721 N.Y.S.2d 795 (N.Y. App. Div. 2001) (granting documentary filmmaker’s motion to quash subpoena for outtakes); Plasmanet, Inc. v. Gruner + Jahr USA Group LLC, 809 N.Y.S.2d 483 (N.Y. Sup. Ct. 2004) (dismissing defamation claim against magazine publisher); Duane Reade, Inc. v. Clark, 784 N.Y.S.2d 920 (N.Y. Sup. Ct. 2004) (granting anti-SLAPP motion and dismissing defamation claim against newspaper); Finelli v. Tepfer, 2009 WL 1424688 (Conn. Super. 2009) (granting summary judgment for Cablevision in defamation case based on news report about plaintiff’s arrest for assault and animal cruelty); and Sly Magazine, LLC v. Weider Publications, LLC, No. 08-2430 cv (2d Cir. Sept. 23, 2009) (affirming summary judgment and finding no “likelihood of confusion” in trademark and unfair competition case brought by magazine).

Mr. Stracher also provides regular pre-publication advice to such clients as Star magazine, Al Roker Entertainment, and the television series Dog the Bounty Hunter.

Mr. Stracher is a magna cum laude graduate of Amherst College (B.A. 1983), Harvard Law School (J.D. 1987), and the Iowa Writer’s Workshop (M.F.A. 1991). From 1994 to 1999 he was litigation counsel at CBS, and from 1999 to 2004 he was an associate with Levine Sullivan Koch & Schulz, and then a partner at the firm. He became a Senior Vice President and Special Counsel at Media Professional Insurance, before leaving to start his own practice. At present, in addition to his association with the firm, he is a professor of law at New York Law School, senior media counsel to American Media, and general counsel to Hybrid Films, producer of the television series Dog the Bounty Hunter.

Among his other activities, Mr. Stracher has written regularly for The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, and The American Lawyer, and is the author of three books, including Double Billing: A Young Lawyer’s Tale of Greed, Sex, Lies & the Pursuit of a Swivel Chair, and Dinner with Dad: How One Man Braved Traffic, Battled Picky Eaters, and Found His Way Back to the Family Table. His legal scholarship includes: Eyes Tied Shut: Litigating for Access Under CIPA in the Government’s “War on Terror, ” 48 N.Y.L. Sch. L. Rev. 173 (2004). He is admitted to practice in the courts of the District of Columbia, New York, and Connecticut, as well as the United States Courts of Appeals for the Second, Sixth, and Seventh Circuits, and the United States District Courts for the District of Connecticut and the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York.
