LSKS takes seriously its obligation to serve those who otherwise could not afford legal representation. We actively seek out pro bono publico opportunities in the areas of law in which we practice, regularly undertaking representation of journalists and others whose free speech rights are infringed, who are the subject of subpoenas seeking the identity of their sources or their notes, or who seek to compel the government to provide access to proceedings or documents, but do not have the financial wherewithal to retain counsel.
The firm has institutional relationships with several civic organizations as part of this effort:
- NAACP. LSKS attorneys provide counseling to the NAACP concerning the speech and associational aspects of its civil rights activities and, where necessary, defend NAACP staff and volunteers from defamation and similar claims asserted against them as a result of their work. In July 2006, the NAACP presented to LSKS the Civil Rights Champion Award “for outstanding pro bono service and commitment to advancing civil rights and social justice.”
- ACLU. LSKS attorneys have served as cooperating attorneys with the ACLU representing individuals and groups in successfully challenging denials of access to government information under open-records statutes.
- Chinese Staff & Workers Association. LSKS works to vindicate the free speech rights of the labor organization and its members.
Individual attorneys at LSKS also have undertaken pro bono representation outside of our firm’s practice areas. As a result, our attorneys are privileged to have, among other things, successfully litigated a class action case on behalf of welfare recipients, for which two of our attorneys were named “Attorneys of the Year” in 1999 by the Colorado Lawyers Committee, assisted refugees in obtaining political asylum in the United States, represented children as guardian ad litem in abuse and neglect proceedings, and contributed to the successful litigation of a class action securing prisoners’ rights to medical care.
